Bulgarian/US Coigny/ITI Initiative (2005 - 2007)

Martha Ciogney, long time director and president of the International Theatre Institute, retired in 2004 after a career as a major voice in world theatre.

Martha played a key role in Eastern and Central Europe after the fall of the Soviet Union, helping the former East-Block countries such as Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, along with Russia make sense out of a rebirth and reframing of international cultural policy.

Martha had a special relationship over her career with Bulgaria, and has one of the most complete understandings of the theatrical topography in that country.
When she came to CITD with the idea for a small, targeted, renewal of the US/Bulgarian connection, CITD, its US Partner Theatres, and The Trust for Mutual Understanding found her offer to lead such a project compelling.

In the summer of 2005,  Robert Woodruff, artistic director of American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge. Massachusetts and Ivan Talijancic attended the Suitcase Festival in Sophia and the Varna Festival with Martha.

2007 will have Molly Smith and Philip Arnoult joining Martha in Budapest.
